Designed in 1938 by Mario Loreti as one of the best examples of Art Deco in Rome, the Mediterraneo Hotel is a 4-star property located on the highest of the city’s seven hills, the Esquilino. With 251 rooms on 10 floors, the building stands over fifty metres high. The lobby is adorned with marble busts of Roman Emperors and mosaics portraying the departure and return of Ulysses to Ithaca. This decoration is complemented by precious woods and marbles, while a sea motif is also evident throughout the hotel.
All of the 251 guestrooms were inspired by Déco rationalism and although they have undergone renovations, redecorations and modernizations, their original 1940s' furnishings have remained unchanged throughout the years. Thus hardwood floors, high ceilings and large windows give an old-world atmosphere to the bedrooms, while the en suite bathrooms are equally stylish.
The beautiful Breakfast Room with its high ceilings is decorated with tritons and mermaids in carved oak. There are also two large chandeliers adorned with mermaids and matching lanterns. The Bar has an alabaster counter and wood panels inlaid with fine woods, depicting Bacchus amongst the grape harvesters. Ristorante 21 offers an elegant and warm ambience, decorated with antique paintings and a mosaic hunting scene by D'Urso. Here, exquisite dishes of Italian and international cuisine can be savoured, accompanied by a selected list of vintage wines.
